This is a co-ordinated program of research, education and quality improvement projects for newborn infants and their families that is composed of a non-profit voluntary collaboration of health care professionals. Over 800 Neonatal Intensive Care Units around the world participate in this research including St. John Medical Center and Hillcrest Medical Center.

The article is based on a study that assessed the effectiveness of thermal warming mattresses compared with wrapping a newborn in a polyethylene sheet during resuscitation. Thirty-nine patients delivered between 24 and 28 weeks gestation age participated in the study.
